Roofing Maintenance Tips

  1. Examine roof and chimney twice a year.
  2. For roofs, visually inspect all surfaces from the ground if possible.  Look for torn, broken, missing or cracked shingles or tiles.
  3. Avoid walking on tile roofs - they will crack.
  4. Check that sealed joints around roof vents are not cracked. Sealants break down with exposure to sunlight and weather.
  5. Consult with qualified roofing contractor, as necessary, for correction of any roof problems.
  6. Always call your homeowners insurance company first, for any storm related damage.
  7. For chimneys, look for open gaps between the house and chimney, cracks in mortar or stucco and minor settlements.
  8. Seal gaps with an appropriate caulk and repaint.
  9. Consult with a mason to re-point or repair mortar and stucco.
